Back to my acoustic roots for this one, using a combination of different guitar tracks and mandolin.
When I was growing up, I always assumed that mankind was getting smarter and more civilised as technology developed. We would soon be driving around in flying cars, solve our global problems and live in harmony. But now I look back on our progress and the state of the world today, it looks like we keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Same old conflicts, same old prejudices, rampant pollution and no sign of international harmony. The ultimate lost opportunity!
lyrics
A new dawn awakens, and I'm torn out of my dream
I listen to the chorus, of birds and gasoline
They sing of the new day, they chant a song of hope
While cars hum a different tune, a chorus torn with smoke
When I was young, I thought the world
Was growing up with me
But now I feel the world, just turns back history
Turn back history, we're making history
It's not back to the future, but the same old history
We say we love each other, sing the praises of our lives
But when the backs are turned away, out come the sharpened knives
We think we're all so special, we're on a different plane
But underneath the covering, we're really all the same
Turn back history, we're making history
It's not back to the future, but the same old history
It's time we sang together, it's time we learned the beat
Millenia of conflict, have shot us in the feet
Don't give the finger to them, or point it at their feet
You need to point it at yourself, and understand there’s no need to compete
When I was young, I thought the world
Was growing up with me
But now I feel the world, just turns back history
It's time we sang together, a chorus not so torn
An era of awakening, create a brand new dawn.
